To place the DS on the market with a design this futuristic was a big risk ... but it paid off, with 1.3 million versions sold.
To have achieved such a remarkable achievement, DS counted on a prestigious ancestor: Traction. Also designed by Bertoni, the latter tested the hydropneumatic suspensions used on the DS in 1954 with the 15/6 H (on the rear axle only). Combined with power steering which gave famous handling that allowed the DS to ride on only three wheels. The DS19 of General de Gaulle was able to save the president during the attack of the Petit-Clamart, in spite of its punctured tyres.
Henri Chapron designed the convertable version of the DS and also inspired the design of the SM. In 1967 the headlights of the DS were redesigned by Robert Opron. The DS was available in many versions however the ID19 was the most popular model, even though it was less powerful, but less expensive. The estate version of DS was used as an ambulance, or for the prestige of businessmen and the state.
